Vir Chakra
It ranks after the Paramvir Chakra and Mahavir in the category of wartime awards. It is awarded for acts of bravery in the battlefield. It is made of silver and is circular with a half navy blue and half orange ribbon being 32 mm approximately worn on the right shoulder. It is embossed with a five pointed star with Indian emblem in the center. The reverse side of the medal has Vir Chakra written in Hindi and English with lotus being in the center.
History of Vir Chakra
The award was a replacement to Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) awarded by British government when they ruled. The award was established on 26 January 1950 by the president of India along with the constitution of India but was in effect from 15 August 1947 and was restrained for military personnel only. Later on 12 January 1952, the status of award was readjusted with amendments. The first Vir Chakra was awarded in 1947.
Vir Chakra details
The last Vir Chakra was awarded in 1999. There are approximately 204 awarded fighters of Vir Chakra. In February 1999, government of India along with the award announced a stipend of Rs. 850 to all the Vir chakra audacious monthly. Some states have offered pension rewards from their side to these courageous.
