Arjuna Award

Honoured by Indian Government through Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Arjuna Award recognises outstanding achievements in various games and sports at National Level. This award has been conferred upon outstanding performers since 1961 and comprises of a scroll, a statue of Arjuna and cash prize of Rs 5 Lakhs.

With changing times, the rules governing this award was also changed to encompass sportspersons of pre Arjuna Award, additions to the disciplines for conferring the award were made to include categories for indigenous games and physically handicapped.

The guidelines to be eligible for the Award include consistent performance for previous three years on International Level, excellence in the year of consideration of award and as per revised guidelines, should also have demonstrated sense of discipline, sportsmanship and leadership qualities.
Effective 2001, the following disciplines were only considered for conferring of Arjuna Award:

  • World Cup / Olympic Games / World Championship / Commonwealth Games/ Cricket and Asian Games

  • Games of indigenous character

  • Games instituted specifically for physically handicapped

With inclusion of Commonwealth games 2010 and Olympic Games 2010, there were 19 athletes in August 2011 who received the coveted Arjuna Award- the highest in number.

In the year 2012, Arjuna award was conferred upon 25 sportspersons
