Mirchi Music Award

With a concept to award best music in the Indian films, Mirchi Music Awards had been introduced to promote and recognize the outstanding contributions of film musicians. The award has been established by Radio Mirchi Group while its annual award ceremony is held with the partnership of entertainment television channels. This award has gained immense popularity in different parts of country ever since it was established.

History of Mirchi Music Awards

Established in the year 2009, Mirchi Music Awards is awarded for outstanding film music contributions. Annual awards ceremony has been promoted with television coverage by Sony TV since its inception in 2009 till 2011. Its television coverage sponsorship changed in 2012 with the Colors entertainment TV becoming television partner to promote the awards ceremony.

Since its inception, Mirchi Music Awards are innovatively designed as annual music awards to recognize the contributions of musicians in the two specific categories of artistic and technical excellence which musicians showcase in the Indian cinema. Initially, it was started with Hindi films but its arena has been increased and some regional film music has also been included. By now, Mirchi Music Awards is awarded in 17 different categories in film music.

Just one year after its establishment Mirchi Music Awards in 2009, a decision was taken to launch the Southern edition in 2010. With Mirchi Music Awards South in its kitty, Mirchi Music Awards spanned the arena and has emerged into one of the most prestigious awards to recognize artists from Hindi and in Southern films including the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films.

Both editions of Hindi and Southern film music are awarded under the Mirchi Music Awards platform for that professional musicians are invited to become the juries and assess abilities of contesting musicians impartially. Professional musicians and experts belonging to Bollywood music industry have been teamed up to make the selection of deserving musicians for such awards. Prominent lyricist and poet Javed Akhter is the jury's chairman to select outstanding musicians for award.

Some of the prominent names from Hindi film industry like music composers Aadesh Shrivastava, Anu Malik, Lalit Pandit and Louis Banks and playback singers Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kailash Kher, Sadhana Sargam, Sukhwinder Singh, Shankar Mahadevan and Suresh Wadkar besides lyricist Prasoon Joshi and film directors Ramesh Sippy and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra are the jury members.

Major categories of Mirchi Music Awards include Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Album Artist, Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Music Director of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Upcoming Male Vocalist of the Year, Upcoming Female Vocalist of the Year, Upcoming Music Director of the Year and the Upcoming Lyricist of the Year besides the technical awards categories to recognize the contributions in the field of music.
