Maha Vir Chakra
It ranks behind the Param Vir Chakra and comes before the Vir Chakra in the category of wartime awards. It is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in wars against enemies all the three types of wars. A silver medal is awarded is decorated on the left chest with a ribbon of 3.2 cm approximately which is half white and half orange. It has a five pointed heraldic star with the Indian emblem embossed in the center of the medal on the front side. The back side of the medal contains Maha Vir chakra written in English and Hindi both with lotus in the center.
History of Maha Vir Chakra
Distinguished Service Order (DSO) was an award given by Britishers in their ruling period and Maha Vir Chakra is an alternative to this award given by the government of India to military personnel only. 26th January 1950 saw constitution of India along with the establishment of Maha Vir Chakra.
Medallion Details of Maha Vir Chakra
The most number of awards were awarded in India-Pakistan conflict of 1971 being eleven and were awarded to airman of Indian Air Force. Until now, there are 157 fighters awarded with Maha Vir Chakra.
