Golden Kela Awards

Plenty of awards are given out to movie makers in India. These are distributed across a wide range of subjects in film making, ranging from best film to the best art director and other technical awards. Such awards are recognition of the hardwork that these people have put into, towards the making of the movies. Movie awards also spread across a large number of film industries in India, starting from the one at Mumbai, which is known as Bollywood to the various regional centres of movie production. After Bollywood, the largest film industry is supposed to be found in the South India. But, Bollywood is the one which is recognised across the geographical boundaries of states because of the large number of audiences watching these movies.

Concept of Golden Kela Awards

Movie makers produce films at a huge rate, some of which become extreme hits, while others are not able to garner any attention. Movie celebrities act out their roles in these movies, but not everyone is a hit with the masses. Sometimes, people do watch these movies, but there are some oddball reactions. In many cases, it is only after watching the movies from Bollywood that people realise that these have been ripped off from other films or the watching of the movie was a sheer waste of time and money. To target such movie makers, who have supposedly wasted the time and money and the films, which had the worst of different aspects, the Golden Kela Awards were initiated in the year 2009. It has the tagline of the Best of the Worst of Indian Cinema. These awards are selected through online poll conducted by Random Magazine every year, hence reflecting the populist mindset of the masses.

Beginning

Golden Kela Awards was started by Random Magazine in 2009 for the first time. This is a spoof and satire magazine with its take on various matters of the country, celebrities and movies. Random magazine along with the Sundaas Film Institute declared the Golden Kela awards for the first time and the awards were distributed in Indian Habitat Centre in New Delhi for the worst movies and roles in 2008. It was an idea mooted by the Random Magazine to start something which would be a contrast to the popular awards of various categories in Indian cinema and be entertaining, something in the line of Hollywood’s Golden Raspberry Award. The primary aim was to create a fun filled environment and entertainment, without ridiculing anybody personally. Philosophically, it also aimed to give the awardees, a moment to think about the things which went wrong in their choices during the making of these films.

Progress Through The Years

When the Golden Kela Awards were started in 2009, the organisers of the events, as well as the general public, were sceptical of the success and acceptance of such ridicule. But, from 2009, till the year 2013, the five years have been quite entertaining from the side of the Golden Kela Awards. Gradually, some actors and award winners actually came to receive their Golden Kela Awards. Prominent among these celebrities is Abhisekh Bachchan who was given the Dara Singh Award for speaking in an American accent in his movie Delhi 6. In the 4th Golden Kela Awards, Arunoday Singh received the Anti-Kela award for the saving graces of 2011 for Yeh Saali Zindagi on behalf of Sudhir Mishra. In 2013, in the month of April, the 5th Golden Kela Awards were announced and revealed in a glittering ceremony in Delhi, which was attended by Anvita Dutt and received the Worst Lyrics Kela awards herself. This was the first time for the Golden Kela Awards, when an awardee in the worst category, actually visited the occasion and received the award. Advaita Kala, the writer of the movie Kahaani was also present, but he received the award for the saving grace of 2011.

As the years passed by, newer awards were also added to the list. Also, some special occasion awards for different features in the movies were also given in some years in Golden Kela Awards. Not only do these names sound quite interesting, but they also reflect the hard truths of the successes and failures of the movie makers and actors in different categories.

With 5 years having gone by with much fanfare and entertainment, Golden Kela is going to enter into the 6th year. It is to see if these awards are attended by the awardees in more numbers in coming years. Golden Kela Awards has but cemented its place as a critical ceremony, where different types of Bollywood celebrities are faced with some facts about the way their movies are seen among the fans.
