Shaurya Chakra
It ranks behind the Ashok Chakra Award and Kirti Chakra and precedes Sena award in the category of peacetime gallantry awards. It is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry away from battlefield to military as well as civilians when not in direct action with enemy. It ranks third in peacetime awards. It falls in the category of National Bravery and is awarded by the Government of India.
History of Shaurya Chakra
The award was established on 4 January 1952 with effect from 15 August 1947 and is for military and civilians as Ashok Chakra, Class III. It was later revised and renamed as Shaurya Chakra on 27 January 1967. From 1 February 1999, the government decided a monthly stipend of Rs.750 for Jammu and Kashmir whereas Rs.700 for rest of India.
Design of Shaurya Chakra Medal
It is made of bronze and is circular which is embossed with the Kirti Chakra in the center surrounded by lotus wreath suspended by a straight bar suspender. The reverse side of the medal has Ashok Chakra is written in Hindi and English separated by two lotus flowers and a blank center. The ribbon is 30mm wide with a two 2mm orange stripes.
