History of Padma Shri
The civil honor system is principally acknowledged by Government of India. The Government honor system is largely classified in four categories like Civilian, Patriotic, Leadership and Particular. The Padma Awards are given in three forms viz. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree. Padma Shree is awarded for renowned services. The Padma awards were established in the year 1954. These awards are announced every year on Indian Republic Day. The awards were not given to anyone during the years 1978, 1979 and 1993 to 1997 owing to some unavoidable reasons. The total number of awards to be given in a year should not be more than 120 (barring awards to foreigners and posthumously).
The Decoration has a certificate (Sanad) issued under the hand and seal of the president and a medallion. A memorial pamphlet with concise details in respect of each winner is also released on the day of the inauguration observance. The winners are given also a replica of medallion, which they may wear during any state ceremonial functions. These awards do not amount to a title and cannot be used by any recipient as suffix or prefix.
The awards are not associated with any cash grant or any benefit in provisions of allowance etc.
