Ananda Purashkar
Started by West Bengal based media giant, ABP Group, Ananda Puraskar is the major state based annual award given to the literary personalities for extensive contributions in Bengali literature and language. This award recognizes both new and professional creative writers for their roles as literati promoting Bengali literature and language through their creative writings.
This award has become a renowned and prestigious one in West Bengal today that is also respected in other regions as well. It has surely played crucial role in promoting the emerging writers especially those with a promising career plan in the field of literature and language. Overall, the purpose is to promote all those writers who make their pivotal contributions in the Bengali language and literature.
History of Ananda Puraskar
It was on April 20, 1958 that the idea to award Ananda Puraskar was turned into a reality. Annada Shankar Ray pointed out an important factor that there remained absence of awards for Bengali literature. Ever since this award was introduced, literati from Bengali literature are awarded on April 20 every year.
Awards were named after the two eminent personalities from the state namely Prafulla Kumar Sarkar and Suresh Chandra Majumdar, these awards were given annually until couple of years ago. These awards were in the fond memory of Anandabazar Patrika founders. One more annual award was introduced in the year 1984 to increase the number to 3 awards to be given to the Bengali scholars every year.
The addition of 3rd award was in the memory of Ashok Kumar Sarkar in 1984 while the Group celebrated Desh golden jubilee year. By the year 2000 all three awards were merged to make it more organized.
