Kalidas Samman
Awarded for the first time in 1980, Kalidas Samman is one of the most notable Arts and Music awards established in Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This prestigious award is presented by the state government to eminent personalities on annual basis. Having been named after ancient classical Sanskrit writer of India, Kalidasa, the award has already spanned to various art and literature fields since incepted.
Initial conferring of this award was for Plastic Arts, Theatre, Classical Music and Classical Dance given on the alternate basis in those years post its establishment. A drastic change was seen from 1986-87 awards while four art fields were included to be awarded annually rather than making those alternative annual awarding choices.
History of Kalidas Samman
Awarded for outstanding contributions or achievements in the major art categories from Classical Dance to Classical Music, Theatre and Plastic Art, Kalidas Samman was established by Madhya Pradesh government in 1980 with an aim to promote such art forms. This award has attained reputation and recognition in India for its value of being one of the highly prestigious awards awarded annually.
Kalidas Samman carries a plaque and cash prize of 2 lakh Indian rupees with this aim to support, promote and recognize Indian art and its practitioners. Winners of this award are selected through minute assessment of candidates in the fray. The Government of Madhya Pradesh sets up a five member committee representing the experts from art fields especially esteemed personalities including artists, art critics and team of Sangeet Natak Akademi which is an official national academy for arts, drama and dance in the Indian subcontinent.
