Kirti Chakra
In the league of peacetime gallantry awards, Kirti Chakra follows Ashok Chakra Award and precedes Shaurya Chakra. Acts of conspicuous gallantry away from the battle field is awarded by Kirti Chakra Award to military personnel and civilians. Being second in the ranking of peace time awards it is equivalent to Maha Vir Chakra. It is awarded by president of India and falls in the category of National Bravery.
History of Kirti Chakra
The award was established on 4 January 1952 for military and civilians as Ashok Chakra, Class II with effect from 15 August 1947. It was later revised and renamed as Kirti Chakra on 27 January 1967. From 1 February 1999 the government decided a monthly stipend of Rs.1050 for all those awarded with Kirti Chakra.
Design of Kirti Chakra Medal
The silver medal of Kirti Chakra is embossed in the center neighbored by a lotus wreath on the circular edges. The other side of the medal has Kirti Chakra written in Hindi and English which are split by a lotus flower on the either sides with blank space in the center. The ribbon attached is dark green in color and is divided into three sections by 2 mm saffron stripes.
