National Bravery Award
National Bravery Awards, a set of awards, are given to about 24 Indian children below the age of 18 years for their “commendable acts of gallantry against all difficulties”. The awards were started in the year 1957 jointly by Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) and Government of India. The bravery awards are the most esteemed civilian awards for children. These awards include a number of different awards listed below:
- The Bharat Award
- The Sanjay Chopra Award
- The Geeta Chopra Award
- The Bapu Gayadhani Award
- The National Bravery Award
These awards are declared to children between the ages of six to eighteen years on 14th November (Children’s Day) every year. These awards are presented to the children on the eve of Republic Day by the Prime Minister of India but before this the President of India hosts a reception in honor of recipients where they also meet the media. The recipients of Bravery Awards also take part in the Republic Day parade at New-Delhi on 26th January every year.
The selection for the awards is done through the applications received from local district officials by the high level committee (including some NGOs) formed by the ICCW.
History of National Bravery Award
These awards were started in 1957 after a heroic deed of one child at Delhi’s Ramleela Ground at the Red Fort. During the Ramleela presentations, a tent (shamiana) caught fire due to electric short circuit and a scout of 14 years of age, Harish Chandra, ripped open the burning tent quickly with his scout knife thus saving hundreds of lives who were trapped inside. Pandit Nehru, the First Prime Minister of India who was witnessing the Ramleela performances at that time, was stunned by this act of presence of mind and bravery which inspired Nehru to instruct the officials to form an award to honor brave children from whole of the country. Immediate action was taken and the boy Harish Chandra got the first official bravery award for his bravely act by Pandit Nehru himself on 4th February 1958. This tradition has continued since then till now jointly by Government of India and Indian council Of Child Welfare (ICCW).
The Geeta Chopra and Sanjay Chopra awards are the two coveted awards which were started in the year 1978 in the memory of two brave children, sister and brother respectively, who laid their life during their kidnapping confrontations. These two awards are conferred to a girl and a boy for their act of courage. The Bharat Award was started in 1987 and is considered the highest among all the Bravery Awards. Bapu Gayadhani Award was instituted in 1988 and is also considered a prominent one.
