Gurudwara Bhai Daya Singh
Guru Bhai Daya Singh was born in 1661 AD to Bhai Sudha Ji and Mai Diali Ji at Lahore. His father, Bhai Sudha was a traditional Sikh and a very sincere devotee of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, who was the ninth Holy Guru of the Sikhs. Anandpur Sahib was a place frequented by him and his younger son, Bhai Daya Singh, pay their respects to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Holy Guru of the Sikhs. At a very young age, Bhai Daya Singh was well trained in weapon handing. He was a multi-faceted person as he was quite well versed in the Hindi and Persian languages, was interested in studying about the golden, olden period of India literature. He was also well versed in Gurbani. On one such visit to Anandpur Sahib in 1979, Bhai Daya Singh's family decided to settle down there permanently. Bhai Daya Singh developed all these multiple talents from the durbar of the Guru.
During his stay here, Bhai Daya Singh became a highly credible devotee for the Guru as he was his chosen representative to many of the nearby hill stations to spread the Guru's teachings to a wider audience. The year 1699 revealed how devoted Bhai Daya Singh was to Guru Gobind Singh. During the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, when the Guru had called for an assembly, Bhai Daya Singh was the first among the five saints, who had offered to sacrifice his life. Guru was highly impressed by the Bhai Daya Singh and inducted him as one among the five Panj Piaras , meaning, five beloved ones.
Though all the five Piaras were equally important, Bhai Daya Singh was the favorite among them for the Guru. He served as the Guru's Army General in many wars and led his team effectively.Wherever he went, he always advised his fellow Sikh members to help each other. He was highly educated, very organized, sincere, dedicated and with the single minded ambition of serving the Sikh community. He also went on to become the most trusted and reliable member of Guru Gobind Singh.
When Guru Gobind Singh met the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur at Nanded, on the banks of the river Godavari, Bhai Daya Singh was also present. He also took part in the Amrit Sanchar function that the Baba organized. His policies and principles inspired many people; therefore a Gurudwara was set up in Nanded close to the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur's Gurudwara. It is also situated in the same complex where the Sachkhand Hazur Sahib is located. Bhai Daya Singh and Bhai Dharam Singh were two of the five Panj Piaras were cremated in this particular place. It is interesting to note that both these saints were baptized by Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib. These were the two people who continuously followed the Guru wherever he went and remained with him till his last breath.
Bhai Daya Singh was considered to be a highly educated man and he was known for his knowledge and his organizational skills. The Sikhs have a code of conduct manual that has to be followed in their everyday lives. This code of conduct lists out a set of rules and regulations that make the people better human beings. This sacred manual is also known as the Rahitnamas. Bhai Daya Singh's life was such a positive influence on other Sikhs, that a separate chapter in this manual is dedicated to Bhai Daya Singh.
