The Tehsil Sathankulam or Sattankulam is located in the Thoothukuty District of Tamil Nadu state. It is in close vicinity and well connected by road and rail to other developed towns and cities such as Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Nagerkovil etc. which makes this tehsil a progressive and prosperous tehsil. The average literacy rate is 81% which is way ahead of the countrys average of 59%.

Agriculture is the main occupation of the area as there is enough rainfall and the soil is rich, red and fertile. Paddy and groundnuts are widely grown and there are large plantations of Palmyrah trees from the juice of which is produced palm jiggery. Making palm jiggery used to be one of the most important occupations of the people in this region but with the increasing literacy and other better occupations people have moved away to other forms of agriculture, retailing, education and white collared jobs in the area or in other cities. People from this area are known to be hard working and just and do not indulge in crime. This is due to their belief in a local folk tale that proclaims against greed and dishonesty.

The tehsil is the home of the enterprising Nadar community that dominates the trade and commerce, agriculture and alternative medicine.(212)
