Thoothukudi district is a southern district in the state of Tamil Nadu. Thoothukudi town is the district headquarters of the district. The district was formerly under Tirunelveli district until the year 1986.

The district is located between 8° 48′ 10.8″ N Latitude, 78° 8′ 40.2″ E Longitude. The area of the district is 4621 sq. km. The district is surrounded by Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram districts and the Gulf of Mannar. During the medieval times, the region was known for fishing and pearl diving. It was one of the oldest ports in the world during the Pandyan era in 500 BC. Thoothukudi was once known as the Pearl City.

The economy of the district is based on the shipping, fishing, agricultural industries and other industries such as chemical and power.
