Until 1901, Chakrata was the part of Dehradun district but now it is a small town in the cantonment area of Dehradun. Chakrata is located between the rivers tons and Yamuna with an elevation of approximately 7000 feet above sea level. The distance from Dehradun is 98 kilometers and is connected well by road and rail transport. Due to its cultural and ancient significance, a large number of tourists visit Chakrata every year from all over India. Villages proximate to Chakrata is home to Jaunsari tribe that is residing at this place for centuries. British army established this place as cantonment area in the year 1866 with the troops occupying this place in year 1869. Chakrata is well connected to Dehradun and Mussorie by rail and bus routes. Tiger fall is one of the most famous attractions of this place. The place is known for its temples, which include the famous Mahasu Devta temple in Hanol. The temple was built in dedication to the lord mahasu in ancient times. In recent years, there has been a significant growth in the number of schools and colleges in the tehsil. This has further improved the literacy rate in people residing in the tehsil.
