Virudhachalam is a metropolis & taluk control center in Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu. It is also called Vriddhachalam. Its name Vriddhachalamcomes from 2 words of Sanskrit language - Vriddham  means oldAchalamMeans Mountain. Thus, the meaning of Vriddhachalam is 'Old Mountain'. The place is also known by another name Thirumudhukundram which means Thiru means holy, mudhu means old, kundram means hill. The place is best known for its railway station and destination. Virundhachalam serves the halfway linking to Trichy, Salem, Chennai and Madurai rail routes. It is very nearest to Neyveli. Manimuthar , the river flow from here, is considered as divine. In Tamil language, Virudhachalam is known as Pazhamalai which too means the similar old mountain. It is among the oldest cities in district Cuddalore. The very old and well-known, God Siva temple named as Pazhamalai Nadhar holy place is also situated in the center of this town. This holy place was build up by Chola empires in the ancient India. It acquired 5 huge towers- 1 in the center and the rest represents the 4 directions (south, east, north, and west). Another well-known temple is Thiru Kolanjiapper. It is situated 5km far from this city. Both are to be found near the Salem highway of Cuddalore district.
