This a small tehsil situated in the Prakasam district in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The capital city of Hyderabad lies a few kilometres away from this tehsil. The population of this district in the year 2001 according to the census was 37,037. Males form49% of the population while the females constitute about 51% of the population. The tehsil has an average literacy rate of 59%, which is much lower than the national average literacy rate of 59.5% . The percentage of the males is 68% while the females are 50%. The tehsil was known as Mrugayapuri in the olden times but later it got changed to its present day name. The main form of earning lively hood for the people in this tehsil is through agriculture. It is famous for its cashew nuts. They supply to major parts of the world. The main industries flourishing here are for cashew nuts and the handicrafts. The tehsil has a lot of libraries dedicated to Telegu literature. One can find ancient literature and scriptures here in these libraries. The town needs development in health care and basic facilities. It has a number of colleges that provide good education to the people.
