Periyakulam is part of Theni district in the state of Tamil Naidu. The town is present in the lower slope of the mountains of Western Ghats. The land of Periyakulam is very fertile which makes agriculture as the main source of occupation and economy. The southern states get their maximum provision of mangoes from Periyakulam tehsil and therefore town is also called as Mango city. The climate is hot but it has good rainfall. Periyakulam is located near the Varaha river which separates it into Sothern part and Northern part. Periyakulam is also among the oldest town of Tamil naidu having ancient architectural tradition which comprise of famous Balasubramanian temple. Tamil is the official language of the town. The population of the town is educated with many schools and universities in the place. The Horticultural College & Research Institute (HC & RI) which is a body of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is situated in Periyakulam. Due to greenery and nice weather Periyakulam is an attraction for tourists. It is called Pi city and also known for the sweet water from the Berijam Lake kodaikanal. Politically the tehsil is part of the Theni Lok Sabha constituency. Onetime chief minister of Tamil Naidu state Mr. O.Paneerselvam was chosen from the constituency of Periyakulam.
