Ramanathapuram district is one of the districts located in Tamil Nadu state in India. The district headquarters is the town of Ramanathapuram. It has an area of 4175 sq. km. The district is surrounded by Pudukottai district, Palk Strait, Thoothukudi district, Gulf of Mannar, Sivaganga district and Virudhunagar district. It is located between the latitude of 9°05’ and 9°50’ to between longitude of 78°10’ and 79°27’

The district was called as Ramnad during the British period. During the time of 1910, some of the portions of Madurai and Tirunelveli district were clubbed to form Ramanathapuram district. Theriruveli is the place where, few ancient potteries were found by the Indian Archeology Department in later years. The Ex-President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam hails from this region.

• Ramanathaswamy Temple: Ramanathaswamy temple is located in the Ramanathapuram district. This temple is famous for Lingam that was brought by Hanuman which was being installed by Lord Rama.
• Agnitheertham: Agnitheertham is a holy water spread of the sea located in front of the temple gopuram. It is believed that a single dip in this holy water can wipe out all the sins of pilgrims.
• Jadayu Theertham: Historically, Jadayu was known as the one who fought in vein and tried to save Sita from Ravana. It was said that Jadayu was the king of Birds. Jadayu pond water is so sweet as it tastes similar to coconut water.
