Southern Railway
History
The Southern Railway is one of the 16 zones of the Indian Railways. It is the earliest zone created in independent India on April 14, 1951 by merging three state railways namely Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirapalli (Trichy)
Present Status
Southern Railway's present network extends over a large area of India's Southern Peninsula, covering the states of Tamilnadu, Kerala, Pondicherry and a small portion of Andhra Pradesh. Serving these naturally plentiful and culturally rich southern states, the Southern Railway extends from Mangalore on the west coast and Kanniyakumari in the south to Renigunta in the North West and Gudur in the North East.
Headquartered at Chennai, the Southern Railway comprises of the following six divisions.
1. Chennai
2. Tiruchirapalli
3. Madurai
4. Palghat
5. Trivandrum
6. Salem
Workshops
The Central Workshop, situated in Ponmalai (Golden Rock), Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, is one of the main mechanical railway workshop serving the zone. It is popularly called as Golden Rock Workshop, This is basically a mechanical repair workshop that takes repair work of coaches and wagons as well as diesel locomotives. This is the first workshop in the Southern Railway zone to have obtained IMS certification. Being a modernized workshop, it takes up some manufacturing activities as well.
The other two mechanical workshops of Southern Railway are located in Perambur, Chennai.

Both these workshops carry out mechanical maintenance as well as manufacturing activity of passenger coaches.
