Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon
Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon
India’s long term plan of establishing Rapid Transit System encompasses not only the Metro cities but also cities such as Gurgaon, which are highly urbanized and closer to Metros. That way the Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon has been initiated and it has the uniqueness of a privately owned and operated Metro rail project, and after Hyderabad RMRG is the second public-private partnership entity to run a Metro project.
History
The Railway line was first tendered by Haryana Urban Development Authority, HUDA, as a point to point 3.2 km stretch from Sikanderpur to National Highway 8, but it was the desire of DLF to expand the system to connect its cyber city, that is Gurgaon.
This expansion was possible when DLF-ILFS consortium was formed and a new tender that was issued in 2008 was won by this consortium. DLF is a popular real estate company and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services, IL&FS, is also in similar business. Although HUDA objected participation of a Private Company in this consortium, they agreed to the arrangement upon the consortium agreeing to pay 7.65 billion rupees to HUDA as connectivity charges over a period of 35 years, besides parting with 5 to 10% of advertising and property development related revenues. In the DLF-ILFS joint venture, IL&FS is the majority stake holder. The project was awarded to them in July 2009 with a 30 months schedule to complete and at a 9 billion rupee cost.
Few other contracts were awarded in 2010 and 2011, for attending to other functions relating to Rapid Transit System at Gurgaon, such as Siemens to build five 3 car metro trains, as the system is supposed to provide transportation for 30000 passengers per hour.
Same way, for installing Automatic Fare Collection system, Thales were awarded contract in 2011, who will develop the back office system, produce and install 72 automatic gates and related IT infrastructure in all the 6 stations attached to this corridor.
Operations
The Rapid transit system at Gurgaon is designed to facilitate 30000 commuters every hour, with three coach trains to run at 3 minutes interval, each train carrying 1010 passengers, at a maximum speed of 90 km per hour.
The fare will be a constant rate of Rs 10 for any ride.
Stations
This metro line will be both double tracked and single tracked, Sikanderpur-DLF Phase II being double tracked and the platforms will be of 75 metre length.
The stations in this corridor will be Sikanderpur, DLF Phase II, Belvedere towers, Gateway tower, Mall of India, Depot and DLF Phase III.
