Navi Mumbai Metro
In line with the country’s policy of improving transport facilities in the Metro cities, Maharashtra Government has taken up the Navi Mumbai Metro rapid transit system through its City and Industrial Development Corporation and the project work began in 2011. The Navi Mumbai Metro project is planned to cover 117.3 km distance with six elevated rail corridors.
Corridors
The master plan for this project was drawn by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the plan prescribes six different corridors.
Corridor 1: The first corridor will be from Uran to Nerul via Ranjanpada, running for a stretch of 28.3 kilometers.
Corridor 2: The second corridor will run for 21 kilometers, the route starting at Belapur and covering Karghar, taloje, Kalmboli and Kandeshwar stations, it would reach Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Corridor 3: The third corridor will cover a distance of 25 kilometers running from Vashi, through Nerul to reach Panvel.
Corridor 4: The fourth corridor encompasses the distance of 14 km from Ranjanpada to Seawoods.
Corridor 5: The fifth corridor is planned for a distance of 20 km and will run from Dighe to Belapur, via Turbhe
Corridor 6: The sixth corridor would run for a distance of 9 km from Vashi to Mhape via Ghansoli.
Construction
The plan execution of Navi Mumbai Metro would start with Corridor 2 in the proposed route covering Belapur, Karghar, Taloje, MIDC, Kalambodi and Khandeshwar stations and terminating at Navi Mumbai International Airport. In this phase, a maintenance depot will also be constructed on a 20 acre plot at Taloja for attending to the needs of circular line and a temporary maintenance depot will be on operation at a 5 hectares land at Khandeshwar.
The first stretch of construction will cover a distance of 21.45 km as follows:
- 11 km between Belapur and Pendhar
- 2.2 km between Pendhar and MIDC and
- 8.15 km between MIDC and Khandeshwar.
The first phase budget of project cost Rs 1694 crores has been approved.
The stations that would be covered in the first section will include Belapur Rly, Belapur Sector-7, Science Park, Utsav Chowk, Sector 14, Central Park, Pethapada, Sector 34, Panchand, Pendar, Sector 10 Kamothe, Sector 2E Kalambodi, Sector 7E Kalamboli, Sector 10E Kalamboli, Kasadi and also two railway stations in the MIDC area.
Project Status
The Navi Mumbai Metro project has successfully gone through the approval process and the foundation stone for the project was laid on 1st May 2011 by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the System’s first phase commenced in October 2011.
