Mumbai Metro
In line with the Country’s policy of introducing Rapid Transit System in all the Metro cities of India, the Mumbai Metro was launched in 2006, by constitution of Mumbai Metro One Private Limited, a company formed as a joint venture of Reliance Infrastructure, Veolia Transport and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
The first phase of the Mumbai Metro project was inaugurated by the Hon. Prime Minister of India, in June 2006, with a project plan of constructing a three-lie high-capacity metro railway system covering 63 km distance and the construction work commenced in February 2008 to be completed in 2012.
Plan
The prime objective of Mumbai Metro is to give Mumbai residents a mass rapid transport system that provides facility of passengers taking the transport within one or two kilometer distance and cater to the needs of all areas that are not served by the existing Suburban Railway network. The Mumbai Metro project is to be completed in three phases on a total project cost of Rs 36000 crores, with eight lines comprising a total length of 146 kilometers approximately.
Changes From Original Plan
MMRDA made mid-course corrections in its original plan in 2011, which was originally to cover a 20 km distance from Colaba to Bandra, metro line constructed underground for 10 kilometers from Colaba to Mahalaxmi and then as an elevated track from Mahalaxmi to Bandra, which is now extended to go up to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, facilitating more sectors of commuters.
The improved plan will cover a line of 33.5 km Colaba-Bandra- SEEPZ involving Rs 21600 crores project cost and this will be the first underground metro line in full stretch. The extended Mumbai Metro line would connect business districts such as Nariman Point, BKC, MIDC and SEEPZ with the International Airport and it will have 27 stations in the line.
Operations
The capacity and frequency of Mumbai metro is very encouraging as it would run up to 16 trains during peak hours, each train having four to six coaches, catering to the travel need of 25000 commuters per hour in the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar line, with a travel time of just 21 minutes from Versova to Ghatkopar.
The fares to travel in Mumbai Metro trains is on a three-tier structure as follows:
- Rs 6 for 3 km distance
- Rs 8 for a distance of 3 km to 8 km
- Rs 10 beyond 8 km distance.
With a well planned project structure, coverage and tariff plans, Mumbai Metro is bound to be a great value addition to Mumbai and Maharashtra State.
