Chennai MRTS

The Chennai MRTS  is now operative between Chennai Beach andVelacherystations covering a distance of 25 km with 21 stoppages and being extended up to St. Thomas Mount for another 5 km  to have interchange facility with the suburban EMU section, however, the Phase III of the MRTS project will extend this line uptoVilliwakkam to a further stretch of 16.76 km.

This is totally an elevated system, operated by Southern Railways, whilst the Chennai Metro project is progressing in phases at different parts of the City.
The Master plan of Chennai Metro Rail project as drafted by DMRC includes corridors in the following manner:

  • Line 1 from Tiruvottiyur to Chennai International Airport with a stretch of 32.1 km of which 14.3 k will be underground,  to be completed by 2014
  • Line 2 from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount with a stretch of 22 km of which 9.7 km will be underground
  • Line 3 from Mogappair to Tiruvanmiyur with a stretch of 24 km of which 10 km will be underground

Line 4 from Porur to KamarajarSalai,Line 5 from Ring Road to Ring Road, Line 6 from RadhakrishnanSalai to Kilpauk Medical College and Line 7 Along NH5 Road at two points are also found in the plan, while  Line 1 execution is fast progressing with execution.
