Chennai Metro
The Chennai Metro project is now under speedy execution and it is one of the rapid transport measures that the State Government has taken up. Under Phase I, the project includes two corridors covering 45.1 km length, 55% of which will be underground and its elevated section expected to be operational by 2013, while the project is scheduled to be completed by 2014-2015.
History
Delhi metro having proved a success, the same type of rapid transport system was recommended to the DMK Government by DMRC and the plan taken up for execution. However, this plan was dropped by the AIADMK Government which came to the power, because the new Government thought that a monorail network would prove more suitable to the City . The Government changed again in the next elections and the DMK Government who came to power again, took up the Metro rail project in all earnestness.
The new Government chose to include the Metro rail project in the 2007-2008 State Government budget and an expenditure of 50 crore rupees was approved for the preliminary work, upon submission of a Detailed Project Report to be submitted by the DMRC Rail Project. The State cabinet approved this project on 7th November 2007 and the task was entrusted to a Special Purpose team, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)
