Dindigul is one tehsil and District headquarters located within Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. This tehsil is an eleventh biggest Urban Agglomeration on basis of census 2011 conducted in Tamil Nadu. This name of Dindigul came from Portmanteau of Thindu, which means pillow and kal means Rock. This name refers to one bare hill, which dominates this tehsils both skyscape and landscape. While this tehsil is largely famous as a city of locks, Biryani city, tannery and textiles, it is a land, which is sandwiched between Sirumalai and Palani Hills. It has cultivable land of about 200,000 hectares and agriculture remains as main occupation for inhabitants of this tehsil. There is one forest area, which is a reserve of about 85 hectares that is rich in fauna and flora. Particularly Kurinji flowers one can find on green rolling hills of Palanis lower range that bloom only once in a period of 12 years are very famous. This tehsil is home of one major textile spinning and IT industry ranking highest in capacity next to Coimbatore in state. There are a large number of Textile Mills within and around this tehsil.
