It is a town as well as municipal board lying in Ambedkar Nagar, which is a district of one of the largest Indian states, Uttar Pradesh. Akbarpur is the secretarial headquarter belonging to Ambedkar Nagar. It is well-known for the birthplace of one of the most conspicuous freedom fighters, Lt. Mr. Ram Mahohar Lohia, who was born in 1910 and died in 1967. It was made on September 29, 1995 and rechristened in the sweet memory of the architect of constitution, Dr. Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar. It is situated on the embankment of pious river, Tamsa. As per our religious book, Ramayana, this is the place where one of the greatest kings, Dashratha shot the obedient son, Shravan. Because of this incidence, this place is known as Shravan Kshetra. The area of this town covers about 2520 km. About 90% of the people live in villages. According to 2001 census of India, the population of this town is about 33,889. Males and females constitute 52% and 48% respectively. The literacy rate of this town is 63%, which is greater than the literacy rate of the nation. The literacy rates of males and females are 67% and 53% respectively. The population thriving under the age of six years is about 16%. Educationally, this town is more advanced than other towns belonging to Ambedkar Nagar. Many renowned schools and colleges exist here. The chief trade of this town is dependent on farming and power looms. There also exists station of thermal power, which belongs to NTPC.
