The name of the district has been a consequential result from the temple of Narsimhadri which was afterwards recognized as Stamba Sikhari. The temple was later called the temple of Stambadhri. The perpendicular rock standing beneath the temple is called Kamba. It was assumed that the district of Khammam assumed the name after this erect rock and progressively the district of Khammam was too given the name ‘Khammam’.

It covers an area of sixteen thousand twenty nine square kilometer. Khammam is bordered by:

• The district of Krishna in the north,
• East and West districts of Godavari in the west,
• The districts of Warangal and Nalgonda in the west, and
• The state of Chhattisgarh towards the north.

The River of Godavari is the major river of the district of Khammam. The climate and soil of the place is very appropriate for a large assortment of horticultural crops such as the Mango, Cocoa, Banana and Pepper Areca nut. The people of this place are hard working and mostly engaged in agriculture.

The major population of Khammam is scheduled castes and tribes. The chief tribes which encompass a main segment of the total population of the district of Khammam are the Lambadas, Kondareddis and Koyas.
