Nagapattinam is one tehsil in Tamil Nadu state of India. It is also Nagapattinam districts administrative headquarters. This tehsil came into prominence during Medieval Cholas period from 9th to 12th century CE. It serves as their significant port for east bound commerce and naval expeditions. Of that time, Nagapattinams Chudamani Vihara is one significant Buddhist structure built by emperor of Sri Lanka with help of kingdom of Chola. Majority of Nagapattinams people have employment in sea-borne fishing, trading, tourism and agriculture. Main occupation of this tehsil is fishing within Bay of Bengal waters and they sold fish in weekly and daily fish markets of town. A major site for pilgrimage here is a Nagore Durgah, which a site is built in 16th century. Major festival of this tehsil is Kanduri festival, which people celebrate for 14 days in this Durgah. They view it as one sacred exchange among Muslims and Hindus express solidarity of blended faith in region. Other major sites for Hindu pilgrimage at this tehsil are Soundararajaperumal Temple and Kayaroshanaswami Temple. This tehsil is a base of tourism for Velankanni, Kodikkarai, Mannargudi, Tharangambadi, Vedaranyam, Poompuhar and Sikkal. Main mode of transportation is roadways, while city also boasts of its sea and rail transport.
