Phagwara is a city and houses a Municipal Corporation in the state of the Punjab, in India. Located in the central part of Punjab in the Kapurthala district, Phagwara is known to be the homeland for a lot of NRI (Non Residential Indians) Formerly a part of Jalandhar district. Now in Kapurthala, Phagwara is said to be built by the Emperor Shah Jahan as a market town. However Phagwara is said to have obtained its name from Phagu, a great devotee of the sixth sikh Guru, Shri Guru Hargobind Sahibji. Phagwara (or Phagu da warra) means land of Phagu. Phagwara is the main industrial centres of the Kapurthala district. Phagwara is also one of the major express rail stops. With express trains like the Shatabdi express halts here.
