Sharing border by Ujjain, Dewas and Sehore districts in southwest and Rajgarh surrounding from east, Shajapur is also covered by Jhalawar district of neighboring Rajasthan state in its northern border. It comes under Ujjain Division of MP state. Previously Shajapur was part of Gwalior district as a major district. Reorganization of states after 1947 paved the way for the foundation of Madhya Bharat that also included Shajapur district and big portion of other parts from erstwhile Gwalior State. By November 01, 1956, this state was renamed to Madhya Pradesh (MP).

Deep black and shallow black brown soil with alluvial features make its soil typical. Shajapur district can be sub-divided into following geographic locations:

• Western Shajapur comprising Agar Malwa tehsil. It has many hill tracts showcasing uniqueness.
• Forested upland stretches in northern to southern region of Shajapur cover some parts of Agar Malwa and whole Shajapur tehsil alongside some portions of Susner tehsil.
• Southern and northern regions of Shajapur district as part of Kali Sindh basin stretch.
• Scattered hillocks distinguishing it from rest part of MP.
