A part of Indore Division, Indore district is developing fast with its total area of 3,898 km². Recent census of 2011 shows it has total population of 3,272,335 (1,700,483 males and 1,571,852). Sex ratio of Indore district is 924 females per 1000 males which are still not satisfactory although it attained 82.3% literacy rate with males at 89.2% and female 74.9%. Districts Ujjain, Dewas, Khargone (West Nimar) and Dhar surrounds this district from north, east, south and west respectively.

Chambal and Kshipra rivers pass through Indore district. Mhow city is important cantonment town of this district where premiere training institutes of Indian Army is located. Central School of Weapons and Tactics (CSWT) under Border Security Force (BSF) of India is located in Indore city. Two other major towns Depalpur and Sanwer develop fast.

Four tehsils of Indore district Depalpur, Sanwer, Indore and Mhow follows modern approach towards life. The district has four blocks, 335 Panchayats and 649 villages. One noticeable aspect with this district is that one of its villages Rojadi distinguishes itself with being first village of its kind where power supplied directly from transformer has individual connection for each house which isn't found in other villages.
