One of the new districts of MP, Harda was created in the year 1998 while administrative reorganization attempt was made. The district had been carved from erstwhile Hoshangabad district that had been split into two to create new Harda district. Today Harda district is part and parcel of Jabalpur Division which has too much political and administrative influence on MP for state and national interest. This district remains in the limelight for being a place where several leaders of towering vision were born.

Natural setup of Harda and it lying on Narmada River valley makes it geographically important. The whole northern portion of this district is surrounded by Narmada hence it forms its boundary in that side. The district's southern portion comes under the Satpura Range that too enhances its beauty to maximum extent. Today Harda town serves as the district headquarters of this district that is part of the state capital Bhopal Division.

The 2001 census had recorded total population of Harda district at 474,174 inhabitants. This district with an area of 2644 km² is surrounded by other district Sehore, Hoshangabad, Betul, Khandwa and Dewas bordering it from north to northeast to southeast, west and northwest respectively.
