Kottayam also referred to as ‘city of letters’ due to its booming publication industry, is situated in the southern part of Kerala. It lies between 9° 15' and 10° 21'latitude and 76° 22' and 77° 25'longitude. It shares its borders with Western Ghats to the east and Lake Vembanad and Kutannad rice fields in the west.

Kottayam has unique characteristics as compared to other districts of Kerala. With beautiful backwaters, paddy fields, hills and extensive rubber plantations, it surely is one place to visit. The city is actively involved in trade of spices, rubber and other commercial crops. There is a dedicated Rubber Board under Government of Kerala that operates the acres of rubber plantations of this region.

Kottayam is also considered as ‘city of letters’ for its contribution towards print media and literature. Kottayam also stands first in the field of Mass communication, education and book publication. Most of the famous publications in Kerala are being published from here. It is also home for many press and book publishing companies.

Kottayam also has a large number of folk dances, Koodiyattam and Margamkali being the famous ones. Margamkali is a popular art form amongst the people of Christian communities. The main theme of this dance form revolves around the life of St. Thomas. On the other hand, Koodiyattamis an ancient temple art recognized by UNESCO as a heritage dance form. It is based on ancient Sanskrit drama.
