Dharwad, is a north western district in Karnataka. Archeological studies show that this place was habited by people from Paleolithic age. Recorded history suggests that the place was ruled by many dynasties such as Badami, Kalyan, Chalukyas, Rastrakutas, Vijayanagar, Adhilshahi, Mysore kingdom and the Peshawas of Pune.

The nearby city of Hubli was consolidated with Dharwad to form Hubli-Dharwad municipal corporation in 1962. The area of the district is 4263 sq km and is surrounded by Belgaum, Gadag, Haveri and Uttara Kannada districts. The average height of the district is 800 mtrs above sea level.

The district is tropical region and is influenced by monsoons due to which agriculture is the main occupation of the district. Some of the agricultural produce of the district includes Cotton, wheat, ragi, jowar and oil seeds.

• Chandramouleshwara Temple, situated at Unkal was constructed by the Chalukyas.

• Glass House, is a palace of glass. This palace was inaugurated by Prime Minister smt. Indira Gandhi.
• Banashankari Temple Amargol, Bhavanishankar temple, Annigeri, Kundgol, Mahalakshmi Temple, Shantinatha Basadi Jain Temple, Siddharoodha Math, etc. are other tourist places at Dharwad.
