Davanagere, a district in Karnataka was formed in the year 1997. This district was once part of neighboring Chitradurga, Shimoga and Bellary districts. The newly formed district lies in the central part of Karnataka.

Chitradurga, Shimoga and Haveri districts form the borders for Devanagare. The district is characterized by plains and windy areas. Due to this, the district has grabbed the attention for establishment of wind power systems lately. The agricultural produce from the district comprises of rice, cotton and sugarcane.

During the British rule, the place had a thriving cotton textile industry. Today, most of the cotton mills have been shut down and sugar factories have taken that place. The place was popularly known as the ‘Manchester of Karnataka’ during the British rule, thanks to the cotton industry that was existed here.

• Kondajji. With hills and lakes, the place is a good picnic and tourist spot.
• Soole Kere, the second largest lake in Asia, is a source of drinking water.
• Eeshwara Temple at Anekonda is an old temple of Lord Shiva.

The district is an educational hub with major educational institutions in medical, engineering, dental, Ayurvedic, nursing, pharmacy and law colleges in the town.
