Although medium sized but Vijaya Bank has its presence in almost all parts of India through big network of branches. Foundation of Vijaya Bank on October 23, 1931 in Mangalore in the Karnataka was a revolution. Founder of this bank A. B. Shetty had cooperation of many philanthropic people who dreamt to start this bank.
Purpose of establishing Vijaya Bank in this region was to augur banking habits amongst various communities. This bank also proved beneficial to develop habit for thrift and private enterprise in the people of this region.
Reserve Bank of India granted Vijaya Bank scheduled bank status in the year 1958. It saw fast growth after becoming a scheduled bank. Its growth story was more while nine smaller banks were merged in it from 1963 to 1968. Government of India nationalized this bank on April 15, 1980.
Progress of Vijaya Bank remains incessant. By now this bank has 12,107 employees serving 1250 branches in various locations spread in the country. The bank has a big network of 49 Extension Counters too and eases banking by its 643 ATMs installed on many locations.
