Una District acquired its status as a District on 1st September 1972 when the State of Himachal Pradesh reorganised its administrative set up. The erstwhile Kangra district was divided into three districts, Una, Hamirpur and Kangra, during this reorganisation.

Una has a long and interesting history. Earlier, Una was known as Jaswan Dun, which was ruled by Katoch family of Kangra, founded sometime around 1170 AD by Raja Purab Singh. Jaswan State was ruled by as many as 27 kings in succession; It came under Mughal empire during Akbar’s time, then went to the hands of Sikhs, and ultimately British government. Rajput princes of Kangra did not regain their rulership, upon which there was a revolt,but ultimately ending up with the princely family getting a maintenance grant of mere Rs 3600 per annum.

Una district on the other hand claims historical importance because of the visit of Bedi Baba Kaladhari, a descendent of Baba Nanak, who came down and settled at Una, Hoshiarpur, during last century, and made discourses of Grant Sahib.

Religionwise, people in this district are Hindus and Sikhs. The Languages spoken are Pahari, Punjabi and Hindi. The culture and traditions are mixed, covering both Punjabi and Pahari
