National Highway 4 (NH 4) is an Indian National Highway entirely within the state of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu.
In Maharashtra it covers 371 Km, in Karnataka 658 Km, in Andhra Pradesh 83 Km and in Tamil Nadu 123 Km.
The highway is maintained by National Highways Authority of India. National Highway 4 or (NH 4) is a National Highway that links the Junction with NH 3 near Thane to the town of Chennai It runs for a distance of 1,235 km (767 mi).

Four of the ten most populous cities of India are connected by a single highway i.e. National Highway 4. One of the major highways of western and southern India, it connects Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Chennai. Passing through the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra it covers a stretch of1235km/767mi.
Passing through some of the densely populated cities of Maharashtra and Karnataka it contributes to 90% of the Mumbai Chennai segment for the Golden Quadrilateral. As a part to this the two lane single carriageway of NH4 has been ramped up to four lane dual carriageway. As an addition to perfection NH4 was complimented with the much hyped Mumbai Pune Expressway in the year 2000 and the Bangalore-Chennai section is supplemented by the triangle of National Highways NH7, NH46 returning to NH4 at Renipat. In certain areas of Karnataka this highway is termed as Pune-Bangalore ( PB ) Road. Through Maharashtra and Karnataka the NH4 sees some of the beautiful cities of Satara, Belgaum, Dharwad, Karad, Hubli, Davengere, Tumkur and Kolhapur.
A time saver tunnel has been made to bypass the busy Katraj ghat in Pune which helps in saving almost an hour of travel time. It passes the city of Pune through Dehu road to Katraj. The bypass is well served with four lanes and two service lanes on each side of the road.
The national highway has two exits for Sangli-Mirag twin cities. Each exit is at a distance of 40km forming a triangle with Sangli and NH4. The highway bypasses Sangli well before, at a distance of 40km/25mi.
