Gurgaon, the industrial and financial center of Haryana is the second largest city in the state. It has been ruled by Rajputs, Muslims and Marathas. Later the British integrated it into Punjab state as a district. It was a small farming village until the automotive company Maruti set up factory there and changed Gurgaon forever.

The population of the district has nearly doubled within the last decade.  As per the latest census the population stands at about 1,600,000. Male female population ration is 54:46. The average literacy rate is at 77%, higher than the national average. About 13% of the population in under the age of six.

Gurgaon district is about 21 km. long and 27 km. wide. It is located at the northern edge of the Aravali mountain range. A beautiful protected migratory bird sanctuary known as the Sultanpur National Park is located within the district. Sohna, Farrukh Nagar and Gurgaon are the main villages within the district. 

The culture and lifestyle of the people of Gurgaon has recently been very influenced by western culture due to the presence of several multi-national companies setting up their offices and operations there. It has a very cosmopolitan nature as different religions, castes and creeds intermingle with each other. Mela Masani Mata and Sitla Mata ki Mela are a couple of the popular fairs held annually in the district.
