The district of Ahmedabad is a part of the state of Gujrat. It comprises of the city of Ahmedabad, the seventh biggest city of the country. The city is situated on the banks of river Sabarmati. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in this town.

The city of “Karnavati” was set up by King Karandev I, after his victory over Ashaval, the Bhil king. This kingdom of Karnavati could maintain its significance until fifteenth century when Gujrat surrendered to Muslim Sultanate. Sultan Ahmed Shah was the first to establish here his capital. The city, after the name of the Sultan, was named Ahmedabad. The city was established towards the eastern side of the river Sabarmati. Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1915 built an Ashram on the banks of the river.

Ahmedabad district is bounded by Gandhinagar, Sabarkantha and Mehsana on the north and Bhavnagar and Gulf of Cambay on the south. The west of the district is surrounded by Surendranagar and the east by Kheda.
