| Before 1948, this city was called Cownpore and later pronounces as Kanpur. This is the oldest industrial city of Uttar Pradesh and placed as eleventh most populous town of India. Presently the population of Kanpur is around 2.7 million, which comprises people from western, and central Uttar Pradesh though Punjabis, Anglo Indians and Bengalis live in a great number in areas includes Tilak Nagar, Swaroop Nagar, civil lines and Azad Nagar. Around 76% of the total population is Hindu and 16% of the total population of Muslims but there are also other communities live such as Jains, Sikhs, Buddists and Christians. According to the 2001 census of India, average literacy rate of Kanpur is 70.36%, which is higher than the national literacy rate of 59.5% with males literacy 71.92% and women literacy 60.25%.
