Lanja is a small survey town in District Ratnagiri. Lanja is located at 16.85N 73.55E. It has a height of 544 feet. The popular Mumbai Goa Highway passes through the town. Adivali on Konkan railways which is just 15kms away is the nearest railway station. Lanja was the headquarters of Rajapur till August 1st, 1879 from the time of Peshva. Grave of Syed Chand Bukhari Ali Faqir is found in the village that lived there for around five hundred years. Every year Urus is celebrated. On this occasion of Urus a fair was organized which was attended by people of diverse religions and neighboring villagers. According the Indian survey the population of Lanja was 12, 27,800 of which males were 51 percent and females were 49 percent. The average literacy rate of the town is 73 percent which is greater than the national average of 59.5 percent. 14 percent of the total population of the town is beneath 6 years of age. Lanja city has branches of Bank of India which was established in 1969, State Bank of India and State Bank of Maharashtra. Hospital with excellent medical facilities and a Bus depot is also available in the town. City is also well joined with other parts of the country. The temperature remains normally below 10 degrees in winters but in during the time of summers the temperature raised to 40 degrees.
