Madhubani lies around 26 Kilometers towards north-east of the Darbhanga town. It was a part of the former 'Bettiah Raj'. With the passage of time the family quarrels and internal disputes divided this Bettiah Raj. Consequently the Madhuban Raj was created in Madhubani. Madhubani is derived from "Madhuban" and the literal meaning of this word is forest of honey. It is also sometimes referred as "madhu"+"vaani" which means sweet language/voice. Madhubani is considered as the Mithilanchals cultural heart. It is the home of Madhubani Paintings and birthplace of several literary people. The geographical location of Madhubani is at 26.37 N 86.08 E. The Madhubani Town has an average altitude of 56 meters (or 183 feet) above the sea level. The area has the boundary of hilly Nepal region in the north, Darbhanga in the south, Supaul in the east and Sitamarhi in the west. The total area occupied by Madhubani is around 3501 km2. The main rivers in this region are Balan, Kareh, Kamla, Supen, Gehuan, Bhutahi Balan, Adhwara Group, Jeevachh, Trishula and Koshi.
