Bastar, also known as ‘the Land of Tribals and Resources’ is enriched with natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere. It is surrounded with hilly mountains, dense forests, streams, waterfalls, and natural caves.

History:

Bastar was established in the 11th century by the kingdom of the Naga vanshi family who had their capital at Barsur. At that time, their Kingdom was known as 'Chakrakot'. The Bastar Raj family claim to be descendants of the Pandu king, Birbhadra of Delhi. Birbhadra subsequently moved to Mathura where he received a trident from the goddess Bhuwaneshwari. Then he moved on to Jeypur in Orissa with the family goddess. Later on, they settled at Warangal with Danteshwari, their family goddess, who granted them a sword when they moved into Bastar. All these weapons are still in existence and are even now worshipped.

Demographics:

As per 2001 census, the population of Bastar was 1302253, out of which 648068 were male and 654185 were female. There are 1343 villages, 4 tehsils and 14 blocks.

Geographically:

Bastar is located in the southern part of Chhattisgarh and situated at a height of 2000 ft above sea level. Bastar district shares its border with Kanker district in the North, Maharashtra State in the west, and Dantewada district in the south and Orissa State in the east.

Culture:

Bastar is known for its distinctive tribal heritage and culture the world over. Every tribe exhibits a unique traditional living pattern, eating habits and costumes. The tribal people believe strongly in the almighty, but however they worship gods and goddesses in different forms.

Several Bastar Tribes are settled in deep forests. The tribal people are passionate about music, dance and celebrate many festivals. Their art and craft is amazingly magnificent. Women of this region like to wear lots of ornaments generally made from shells, beads, bones, feathers, mixed metals and copper. Dussehra festival is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm at a huge scale in Bastar.
