Chamoli is one of the largest districts in the state of Uttarakhand.In the north region, Chamoli is surrounded by Tibet while in the eastern region, it shares border with districts of Bageshwar and Pithoragarh.Chamoli is famous for its tourist destinations which include Badrinath, hemkund sahib, valley of flowers Gopeshwar. The famous chipko movement during the freedom struggle started at this place. The total area of Chamoli is 2939 square kilometers making it second largest district in Uttarakhand state. The houses in Chamoli have been according to well-planned town ship making it just like a city. Every house has a front area, which is known as Chowk in this region. The main food items of this place are wheat, rice, Mandau and jhanjora. Chamoli is also famous for its toe rings. These toe rings are also known as bichhuwas and married women wear them. Literacy in the People of Chamoli wear traditional dress which is simple and designed to suit the cold environment of hills. Festivals like holi, Diwali, maker sankranti are celebrated with great pomp and show in this tehsil. In recent years, government has made a significant improvement in the quality of education in the tehsil by setting up more schools and colleges.
