Ramanathapuram , also called Ramnad, is a municipality in Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu. The administrative headquarters of Ramanathapuram district are situated here and it is the second largest town in Ramanathapuram district by population .It is very famous for its Raja Palace, which is still a home for former Sethupaty Raja & his family. Some westerners who visit here to teach in their school during the Projects Abroad organisation took shelter in this palace. A documentary movie had been also made on this palace by Philip Radlanski, who visited here in 2004 as an English teacher and is a German citizen. It is close to Devipattinam and Rameshwaramand . These both are important pilgrimage centres. Uchipuli is another main tourist place here. Ariyamaan Beach is one of the most popular entertainment beaches in Uchipuli. Panaikulam, Puduvalasai,Alagankulam are some other popular beaches in Ramnad.The town is growing subsequently after the shifting of district headquarters' offices from Madurai to Ramanathapuram. The water for agriculture is drown from the river Vaigai from where it enters the big tank Periya Kanmaai. It is claimed that the river does not reach the sea because of the size of the catchment. The town has many ponds also.
