Madhepura is a good city and also a municipality in the famous Madhepura district in the state of Bihar in India. Madhepura as it stands now was carved out of the Saharsa district and got the status of revenue district on way back on 9 May 1981. Prior to that, Madhepura was a sub-division under the big Bhagalpur district with effect from 3 September 1845.

This tehsils is located close to the originating point of the famous Kosi River. The river seems to have been originated from a height of about five thousand meters. The river originates from the mighty Himalayas and crosses Tibet to reach Nepal. The river enters India at the fringes of Darbhanga and Madhubani. Here it flows through Saharsa and Saupal and covers a distance of about 250 kms. Ultimately, it waters the area close to Madhepura.

As according to the India census conducted in the year 2001, Madhepura had a total population of 45,015. Out of the entire population, males constituted 55% of the entire population and the females the rest of 45%. Madhepura has an average literacy rate of 62% which is a bit higher than the national average of 59.5%. The male literacy was found to be 71%, and female literacy to be 51%. In Madhepura, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.
