One of the 37 districts of Bihar state in India, Katihar is known for several reasons. Most notably its identity is of being administrative headquarters of district and of course being biggest urban locality in the region. This district comes under Purnia Division of Bihar state.

It was in the year 1973 that Katihar was carved out from Purnia district when it became the full-fledged district thereafter. Total area of occupation which Katihar district has is 3,057 square kilometers or 1,180 sq mi today.

Location of Katihar district is in the northeastern plains of Bihar. Districts Purnia, Bhagalpur and Jharkhands Sahebganj while Malda and Uttar Dinajpur from West Bengal surrounds this district.

Role of Katihar district remained distinct in Indias freedom struggle. Presently this district has three sub-divisions named Katihar, Barsoi and Manihari. Further division of the Katihar sub-division is into 10 blocks namely Katihar, Korha, Falka, Sameli, Barari, Kursela, Pranpur, Hasanganj, Dandkhora and Mansahi which make its administration hassle-free.

The 2001 census recorded total population of Katihar district 3,068,149. The population density of the district is 1,004 inhabitants per square kilometers. This census also recorded sex ratio at 916 females for every 1000 males. The literacy rate of Katihar, as recorded in the same census, is 53.56% respectively.

Inhabitants of Katihar speak local dialects Angika and Surjapuri besides the main language Hindi and Urdu.
