Located at 100 kms away from Patna, Gaya is located on banks of Falgu River (also called as Niranjana, in the great Epic Ramayana). This is one place in India which is considered as Holy by both Hindus and Muslims. It is situated amongst tiny hills made of rocks of Shringa-Sthan, Mangla-Gauri, Brahmayoni and Ram-Shila on three sides and the last direction is sheltered with river flowing on the East. This city is a scenic beauty with natural borders and surroundings with old-buildings and by-lanes connecting the roads.

Historically, Gaya was also famous during the rule of Mauryans in Magadha State. In 18th Century, it was believed that the family of Bhumihar Brahmin, Tekari Raj existed here. In south of Bihar, their estate proudly shows off the building in memory of this prominent representative's family.

Ancient history of Gaya:

Also Gaya is a place of historical importance where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment. About 11 Kms from the city, one can see Boudh Gaya, the place exactly where Gautam Budha attained the spiritual prowess. Ever since the 11th Century, Nalanda, Rajgir, Vaishali have been the centre for learning and culture development. Lateron, these centres gained more prominence during the reign of Mouryans and Guptas. These rulers are said to have ruled most of India and had their Capital base at Patna (Patliputra in ancient India). These Emperors ruled not only India but their empire extended till Middle East of Asia. During this period, Magadha was a large city in which Gaya was a part.

The Golden Quadrilateral runs at about 30 Kms distance from Gaya. This road was earlier called as the Grand Trunk Road before the inauguration of the Golden Quadrilateral, this quadrilateral connects the four directions of India by road. The infrastructure of Golden Quadrilateral in Bihar connects the city of Gaya to Jamshedpur, Patna, Ranchi, Kanpur, Amritsar and Delhi, not to mention other major cities in and around Bihar.

Gaya is the second largest city in Bihar that is well equipped with railway station with trains connecting to Delhi, Chennai, Kokotta and Mumbai. The trains start directly from Gaya and also reach Guwahati and Chennai. The railway station at Gaya is the second largest one in Bihar after Patna Railway Station. Delhi is hardly 15 hours by rail from Gaya.
